"Don't Just Fill Up A Box"

I've seen this said to new mappers many times (hasn't happened to me, yet) and I wish to reply to this comment -- Thanks for the advice, but it's the best we can do at our skill.

It may be easy for you to cut up brushes 'any old way' and turn them into an interesting-looking rooms, but we can't. We 'fill up boxes' to try and make it less obvious that they're boxes! Give us a couple of years (no joke) and maybe we'll be able to make something that is aesthetically pleasing. Just remember that just because a level looks pretty, it doesn't mean it's got good gameplay. I'm not going to name any maps, but I've played quite a few user levels that seem to just focus on making the map pretty.

You may think of me as a 'stupid newbie', but I'm just voicing my thoughts.

Anyway, enough on that. Now onto my box map, which I am filling up, since it's impossible to turn it into an interesting shape.

I've added a few half-assed screens onto the walls, along with a sort of catwalk. The level is playable, at last. Now I'm just adding some stuff to it (filling up the box). Have a look-see.

That's all for this blog post. Thank you.
